Horne Lake Off-Grid Power & Automation Upgrade

Bringing an Existing Off-Grid System Into the 21st Century

This Horne Lake property already had a Schneider off-grid power system that had served the owner for years. The goal wasn't simply to replace functioning equipment with something newer.

The owner wanted significantly more battery capacity, improved generator integration, better remote visibility and the ability to monitor and automate other important systems around the property.

Kingsley Power redesigned the system around dual Victron MultiPlus-II 5000 inverter/chargers, Victron MPPT solar charge controllers and approximately 64 kWh of serviceable LiFePO₄ battery storage.

But the biggest change goes beyond the power equipment itself.

Building a More Serviceable Battery System

Kingsley Power completely redesigned the electrical side of the hydro plant around a DC-coupled architecture.

The new system combines dual Victron Quattro inverter/chargers, a modern Italian-built Sincro DC alternator, lithium battery storage and custom Node-RED controls.

Together, these components allow hydro generation, battery charging, electrical demand and excess energy to be actively managed instead of requiring generation to continuously follow the property's instantaneous electrical load.

More Than an Inverter and Battery System

One of the reasons Kingsley Power uses Victron is the flexibility of the platform.

With the Cerbo GX, VRM and Node-RED, the power system can become a central monitoring and automation platform for the entire property rather than simply producing AC power and charging batteries.

At Horne Lake, Kingsley Power has integrated:

Generator management:  Automatic and manual generator control integrated with the power system.

Septic tank monitoring:  Remote monitoring of the property's holding-tank level.

Temperature & humidity:  Environmental conditions can be viewed remotely alongside power-system data.

Dehumidifier control:  Automatic and manual control based on conditions at the property.

Remote system access:  Power generation, batteries, loads and connected systems can be monitored and controlled without being physically on site.

Victron Monitoring

Knowing When the Septic Tank Needs Pumping

The Horne Lake strata uses pump-out holding tanks rather than conventional septic fields, making tank level an important piece of information for a property owner.

Kingsley Power integrated holding-tank level monitoring directly into the property's Victron system.

The owner can now check the septic level remotely through the same interface used to monitor batteries and the power system, making it much easier to know when a pump-out needs to be scheduled.

It's a relatively simple function, but it demonstrates a much bigger idea:

Remote monitoring doesn't have to stop at the inverter.

Connecting Real-World Equipment to Victron

Kingsley Power uses Shelly relays and interface modules to connect sensors and equipment around the property with the Victron ecosystem.

Support for digital inputs and common instrumentation signals such as 0–10 V and 4–20 mA means the system doesn't have to depend entirely on proprietary sensors.

That creates possibilities well beyond this particular installation.

The same architecture can be used to monitor:

Rainwater storage · Domestic water tanks · System pressure · Pump pressure · Septic levels · Temperature · Humidity · Pumps · Other remote equipment

Node-RED can then use that information to make decisions and control equipment automatically based on what's actually happening at the property.

One Property. One Integrated System.

Solar panels, batteries, generators, pumps, water systems, sensors and controls don't need to operate as unrelated pieces of equipment.

At Horne Lake, the Victron system provides the foundation for bringing those technologies together into one remotely manageable system.

The owner gets more battery capacity and a modern off-grid electrical system, but also something much more useful: visibility into what's happening at the property and the ability to automate equipment based on real conditions.

That's the kind of system integration Kingsley Power specializes in.

Planning an Off-Grid System Upgrade?

An existing off-grid system doesn't necessarily need to be torn out and started over. Kingsley Power can evaluate how power generation, batteries, generators, monitoring and controls can be modernized and integrated around the way your property actually operates.
