VICTRON OFF-GRID
POWER SYSTEMS

Modular inverter, battery, charging and control systems designed for demanding off-grid properties.

Victron Power Systems Built for Demanding Off-Grid Properties

Kingsley Power uses Victron Energy as the foundation for many of its off-grid power systems because the platform is modular, configurable and capable of bringing multiple energy sources, storage and controls together into one integrated system.

Rather than relying on a single all-in-one unit, Victron allows each part of the system to be selected around the requirements of the property. Inverter/chargers, lithium battery storage, solar charging, generators, micro-hydro, monitoring and automated controls can all work together while remaining individually serviceable and configurable.

For remote properties, this flexibility is particularly important. Electrical loads may include well pumps, compressors, table saws, welding and other equipment with significant starting demands. Victron's transformer-based inverter/chargers provide strong surge capability, while the modular architecture allows systems to be expanded, modified and serviced as requirements change.

Victron systems may incorporate:

    • Quattro and MultiPlus inverter/chargers
    • LiFePO4 battery storage and BMS integration
    • Victron MPPT solar charge controllers
    • Cerbo GX system control and communications
    • VRM remote monitoring
    • Automatic generator start and control
    • Solar, micro-hydro and multiple generation sources
    • Node-RED automation and intelligent load control

Kingsley Power designs these components as one complete power system, with the equipment, controls and system architecture selected around how the property will actually operate today and how its power requirements may evolve over time.

Why Victron for Off-Grid Power?

An off-grid inverter has to do considerably more than convert battery power into household electricity. It may need to start large motors, manage charging from a generator, operate continuously under changing loads and work with several different energy sources throughout the year.

Victron's transformer-based inverter/chargers are well suited to these applications. Their strong surge capability is particularly important on remote properties where loads such as well pumps, compressors, refrigeration equipment and other large power tools can require substantially more power during startup than during normal operation.

Victron inverter/chargers also have exceptionally low standby and no-load consumption. This is an important consideration in an off-grid system that operates 24 hours a day, particularly during winter or other periods of low energy production. Some MultiPlus-II models consume less than 20 watts while operating with no AC load and only a few watts in Search mode. Reducing the inverter's own continuous consumption means more stored energy remains available for the loads that actually matter.

The modular design also means the entire power system does not have to be built around a single piece of equipment. Inverter capacity, battery storage, solar charging, monitoring and controls can be sized independently, and additional components can be incorporated as the property changes.

For Kingsley Power, serviceability is just as important as performance. On a remote property, equipment needs to be accessible, understandable and practical to troubleshoot years after it was installed. A modular Victron system makes it possible to diagnose, repair or replace individual components without necessarily replacing the entire power platform.

That combination of surge capability, low idle consumption, flexibility, integration and long-term serviceability is why Victron has become Kingsley Power's preferred platform for many demanding off-grid power systems.

Victron Systems in the Real World

See how Kingsley Power uses Victron inverter/chargers, battery storage, monitoring, generator integration and intelligent controls to solve real-world power challenges on remote properties.

One Platform for Solar, Batteries, Generators and Hydro

Remote properties rarely depend on a single source of energy. Solar production changes with the weather and seasons, micro-hydro may vary with available water, and generators are often required during extended periods of low renewable production or unusually high demand.

A Victron system can bring these different sources together around a common battery and inverter platform. Solar charge controllers, hydro generation, battery storage and generator charging can each contribute energy while the inverter/chargers provide stable 120/240-volt power to the property.

The system can also determine how and when those energy sources are used. A generator can be started automatically when battery conditions require it, charging can be managed around available generation, and surplus renewable energy can be directed toward useful loads rather than simply being wasted.

This allows Kingsley Power to design around the energy resources actually available at the property, whether that means solar and generator backup, continuous micro-hydro, or a combination of several generation sources.

The result is a power system where generation, storage and backup work together, rather than operating as separate pieces of equipment that the property owner has to continually manage.

Intelligent Monitoring and Control With Cerbo GX

Intelligent Monitoring and Control With Cerbo GX

The Victron Cerbo GX acts as the central communications and control point for the power system, bringing information from inverter/chargers, batteries, solar charge controllers, generators and other connected equipment into one interface.

Through Victron Remote Management (VRM), Kingsley Power and the property owner can monitor system performance from anywhere with an internet connection. Battery state of charge, solar production, electrical loads, generator operation, alarms and historical system data can all be viewed remotely.

Remote monitoring is particularly valuable for properties that are difficult to access. Instead of waiting until a problem results in a loss of power, system data can often help identify unusual behaviour, changing performance or equipment issues before a site visit is required.

The Cerbo GX also provides the foundation for much more advanced control. Generator operation, charging, load management and other equipment can respond automatically to conditions within the power system rather than relying on the owner to continually make those decisions.

For a remote property, this means greater visibility into how the system is operating and considerably less day-to-day management, while giving Kingsley Power the information needed to provide more effective remote support.

Automation That Responds to the Power System

Monitoring shows what an off-grid system is doing. Automation allows the system to respond to changing conditions on its own.

Using the Victron Cerbo GX together with Node-RED and connected control devices, Kingsley Power can build automation around the way a property actually operates. Decisions can be based on battery state of charge, solar or hydro production, generator status, electrical demand and other information available throughout the system.

Automation can be used to control:

  • Generator start, stop and cooldown
  • Battery charging
  • Water and space heating
  • Opportunity and dump loads
  • Well and transfer pumps
  • UV water treatment equipment
  • Load shedding
  • Dehumidifiers and other discretionary loads
  • Tank and septic level monitoring
  • Alarms and system notifications

This makes it possible to use available energy more effectively. When batteries are full and renewable generation is abundant, surplus power can be directed toward useful loads such as heating water or operating a dehumidifier. When available energy decreases, those loads can be reduced or switched off automatically.

The goal is not automation for its own sake. It is to create an off-grid property that makes intelligent use of the energy available and requires less intervention from the people living or working there.

Battery Integration Without Being Locked Into One Ecosystem

Battery storage is one of the most important parts of an off-grid power system, but the battery itself is only part of the equation. The battery management system, communications, charging equipment and inverter settings all need to work together correctly.

Victron supports integration with a wide range of lithium battery systems, allowing Kingsley Power to select storage based on the requirements of the project rather than forcing every installation into a proprietary battery and inverter ecosystem.

With compatible batteries, direct communication between the battery management system (BMS) and Victron equipment allows charging and discharging limits to be communicated throughout the system. This gives the battery greater control over how it is charged and used while providing system information through the Cerbo GX and VRM platform.

Battery selection also considers factors beyond capacity and price. Cell quality, BMS design, serviceability, communications, certification and long-term support can all affect whether a battery is appropriate for a particular installation.

Kingsley Power's approach is to select and integrate battery storage as part of the complete power system, ensuring the batteries, inverter/chargers, renewable generation and controls are designed to operate together rather than simply connecting components that happen to be compatible.

Built Around the Generator, Not Just Connected to It

For many off-grid properties, the generator remains an essential part of the power system. Its role changes considerably, however, when it is properly integrated with a Victron inverter and battery system.

Rather than running whenever electrical demand is high, the generator can be used primarily to recharge the battery bank efficiently when renewable generation is insufficient. The batteries and inverter/chargers can then handle changing household loads, including short periods of high demand that might otherwise require a much larger generator.

Victron can also automate generator operation based on conditions such as battery state of charge, system load or other operating parameters. Automatic start, charging and shutdown can reduce unnecessary runtime while ensuring backup generation is available when required.

Proper integration also means considering the generator itself. Generator capacity, continuous-duty capability, fuel type, charging rate and expected runtime all influence how well it will perform as part of an off-grid system.

By treating the generator as part of the complete energy system, Kingsley Power can reduce the amount of day-to-day generator management required while making better use of renewable generation, battery storage and available generator capacity.

Designed to Be Serviced, Expanded and Upgraded

Off-grid power systems are expected to operate for years, often in locations where replacement parts, technicians and suppliers are not close by. How a system is assembled can therefore be just as important as how it performs when it is new.

Victron's modular architecture keeps major functions separated. Inverter/chargers, solar charge controllers, batteries, monitoring equipment and control hardware can be accessed, diagnosed and replaced individually rather than being contained within a single all-in-one appliance.

That also provides flexibility as a property's requirements change. Battery capacity can be increased, additional solar charging can be added, generator controls can be improved and new monitoring or automation can be incorporated without necessarily replacing the entire power system.

For Kingsley Power, this is particularly important on remote properties. Equipment needs to be installed with future troubleshooting, replacement and maintenance in mind, because a system that is difficult to service can become a significant liability when access itself is challenging.

A well-designed Victron system provides a platform that can evolve with the property while remaining practical to understand, maintain and repair over the long term.

Canadian Certification and System Design

Victron manufactures equipment for markets around the world, but not every Victron product carries the certifications required for every Canadian installation. Equipment selection therefore needs to consider more than electrical specifications and whether components can technically work together.

Kingsley Power selects Victron equipment with the requirements of the individual project in mind, including system architecture, installation environment, applicable certifications and how the equipment will be connected and used.

This is particularly important when integrating solar. Requirements such as PV arc-fault protection and rapid shutdown can affect the way rooftop arrays are designed, and some Victron solar charge controllers do not incorporate the same North American PV protection features found in certain grid-tied and AC-coupled solar equipment.

Where appropriate, other equipment can be integrated with Victron rather than forcing every function onto a single platform. For example, Fronius AC-coupled solar inverters can be incorporated into compatible Victron systems, providing another option when the requirements of the installation favour that architecture.

Kingsley Power does not approach Victron as a one-size-fits-all solution. The objective is to use the right combination of certified, compatible equipment for the property and application, while retaining the flexibility, monitoring and control capabilities that make Victron valuable for complex off-grid systems.
