Off-Grid Automation & Controls

Intelligent Control for Generators, Batteries, Loads & Remote Property Systems

Make the Entire Property Work as One System

An off-grid power system doesn't have to simply produce electricity and wait for someone to manage it.

Kingsley Power designs controls and automation that allow the power system to respond automatically as conditions change. Solar or hydro production may increase, batteries may become full or depleted, electrical demand may suddenly rise, or a generator may be needed to support the system.

Using platforms such as Victron Cerbo GX, VRM and Node-RED, along with connected relays, meters and sensors, Kingsley Power can build that decision-making directly into the system.

Automation can be used to start and stop generators, manage charging, shed non-essential loads, use surplus renewable energy for heating or hot water, operate pumps and water systems, monitor tanks and equipment, generate alarms and provide remote visibility into what is happening at the property.

The exact controls depend on the property. A remote cabin may only need automatic generator control and monitoring, while a resort, research facility or hydro-powered property may require considerably more sophisticated energy and load management.

The goal is to reduce the amount of attention an off-grid property requires while making better use of the energy available to it.

Horne Lake Off-Grid Power System Upgrade

Automatic Generator Control Without Constant Attention

A generator is an important part of many off-grid systems, particularly during winter or extended periods of poor renewable production. But owners shouldn't have to constantly monitor batteries and manually start it.

Kingsley Power can integrate generator operation with the power system so it starts automatically when additional energy is required, supports battery charging and shuts down again when its work is complete.

A Real-World Example at Horne Lake

At Horne Lake, Kingsley Power integrated a Yamaha EF4500iSE generator with the Victron Cerbo GX, including custom automatic-start control and extended-runtime fuel capacity.

When solar production can't keep up with demand, the system can bring the generator online without requiring the owner to intervene.

The generator is available when it's needed without becoming something the owner has to manage every day.

Put Surplus Renewable Energy to Work

Off-grid systems don't always have too little energy. During periods of strong solar or hydro production, the batteries may already be full while additional renewable energy is still available.

Kingsley Power can automate opportunity loads that make productive use of that surplus energy. Depending on the property, this could mean heating water, running a pump, operating heating or ventilation equipment, or powering other non-critical loads when conditions allow.

A Real-World Example at Horne Lake

At Horne Lake, the Victron system automatically turns on a dehumidifier in the owner's boat when the batteries are full and surplus energy is available. When those conditions change, the load can be removed again.

The same principle can be applied on a much larger scale at remote homes, resorts, commercial properties and hydro-powered sites.

Instead of simply reducing renewable production when the batteries are full, available energy can be directed somewhere useful.

Designing What the System Does Automatically

Control More Than the Power System

On a remote property, electricity often supports other critical infrastructure. Well pumps, water treatment, heating, ventilation, tanks and septic systems may all need to operate reliably even when nobody is onsite.

Kingsley Power can integrate sensors, meters and controllable devices so these systems respond automatically to property conditions and available energy.

A pump could operate when tank levels require it, non-essential equipment could be shed when battery reserves are low, or an alarm could be generated when equipment or a monitored level moves outside its normal range.

This is particularly useful for remote homes, resorts, research facilities and unattended properties, where discovering a problem early can prevent a much larger one.

Automation allows the power system and the rest of the property infrastructure to work together instead of operating as separate systems.

Know What's Happening Without Being Onsite

Remote monitoring can be just as important as automation. When a property is hours away or accessible only by boat, travelling to the site just to diagnose a problem can be expensive and time-consuming.

Using Victron Cerbo GX and VRM, Kingsley Power can provide remote visibility into battery condition, renewable production, electrical consumption, generator operation and system alarms.

This also gives Kingsley Power useful diagnostic information. If something isn't operating normally, Greg can review system data and operating history before deciding whether an onsite service visit is actually required.

A Real-World Example on Sonora Island

The Sonora Island cabin combines Victron remote monitoring with Ubiquiti communications infrastructure, allowing the power system to be monitored at a property that otherwise requires boat access.

Remote monitoring can turn a service trip into a remote diagnosis, or at least ensure the right equipment and parts arrive with the technician.

Custom Automation for More Complex Systems

Standard equipment settings can handle many basic functions, but more complex properties sometimes require the system to make decisions based on several conditions at once.

Kingsley Power can use Node-RED with the Victron platform to create custom control logic around how the property actually operates.

For example, the system could enable water heating when batteries are full and excess solar is available, shed non-essential loads when battery reserves fall, or operate a pump only when both tank levels and available energy meet specified conditions.

This allows automation to be designed around the property rather than being limited to the functions that came programmed into the equipment.

The system isn't simply following a timer. It can respond to what is actually happening with generation, batteries, loads and equipment throughout the property.

Protect Available Energy When Conditions Change

Not every load on an off-grid property needs to operate all the time. When battery reserves are getting low or electrical demand becomes unusually high, protecting the most important loads can take priority.

Kingsley Power can design automatic load shedding that temporarily reduces non-essential equipment while keeping critical systems such as refrigeration, water, communications or other essential infrastructure operating.

As renewable production increases or battery conditions recover, those loads can be brought back online automatically.

This can help a properly designed system handle difficult periods without simply solving every problem with a larger inverter, battery bank or generator.

Good automation decides not only when to use available energy, but which loads should take priority when energy becomes limited.

Remote Projects Change the Way You Design

Less Attention. Better Use of Available Energy.

The best automation is often the automation the property owner rarely has to think about.

A well-designed control system can manage routine decisions in the background, responding to changing solar or hydro production, battery reserves, generator availability and electrical demand without requiring constant intervention.

For a remote home, lodge, research facility or commercial site, that can mean fewer unnecessary trips, less generator management, earlier warning of problems and better use of the renewable energy already being produced.

Kingsley Power designs these controls as part of the overall power system, so the equipment, communications and automation are built around the way the property needs to operate.

The goal isn't automation for its own sake. It's a remote property that is easier to operate, monitor and maintain.

Planning a Smarter Off-Grid System?

Automation Works Best When It's Designed In From the Start

Generator control, load management, remote monitoring and property automation all depend on understanding how the complete system needs to operate. Kingsley Power can assess the property, electrical loads, energy sources and infrastructure before developing the right control strategy.

Local Site Assessment & System Consultation

Starting at $1,000

For properties within approximately one hour of Kingsley Power. We'll review the power system, electrical loads, generators, property infrastructure and opportunities for monitoring, controls and automation.

Remote & Boat-Access Site Assessment

Starting at $3,500

For remote and difficult-access properties where automation can reduce manual operation and unnecessary service trips. The assessment considers power, controls, communications, monitoring and long-term serviceability.

The assessment is the first phase of designing the right system. If Kingsley Power is retained to supply and build the resulting system, the assessment fee can be applied toward the project.
